The Arbitration Foundation for African Students (AFAS)

APPLICATION FORM

This fund is open to individuals of African or African origin for the purposes of developing and promoting arbitration and other alternative dispute resolution (ADR) processes (collectively referred to as ‘arbitration’) in Africa. The fund is not open to any organisations (legal persons) or consortia and any such applications will not be considered. This form is designed to allow applicants to provide the information that AFAS needs to assess how well their proposal meets its objectives. The application should clearly set out how the applicant intends to use the project and any grant to support the development and promotion of arbitration in Africa. The AFAS Management Committee will only consider requests for funding which are likely to achieve the following Strategic Objective:

  • To advance education in the knowledge, skills, techniques, use and methods of arbitration by the provision of:
  • (a) Funding for students in Africa to attend arbitration related conferences, workshops and moots.
  • (b) A website that will enable information relating to arbitration to be made available and accessible to the general public.

It is very important that applicants read the AFAS Terms of Reference before submitting their full application to ensure they understand and take into account the AFAS objectives and funding criteria. The eligibility criteria is as follows:

  • The applicant must be African or of African origin to be evidenced through a travel document such as a passport.
  • The applicant must be studying or have previously studied arbitration as part of a University Award at either undergraduate or postgraduate level in the past 3 years.
  • The Applicant must not yet have held a full-time permanent academic post in any Higher Education institution around the world.
  • Individuals who have submitted their doctoral thesis for viva voce examination not more than 1 year prior to the application can also apply.
  • Young practitioners with less than 7 years practice experience can apply.
  • A candidate can only make a maximum of two applications per year.
  • Candidates are permitted only one successful application per year.
